Thankfulness: Day 5

Saturdays are good days to feel thankful. Right now, I'm feeling thankful for....

  • as predicted, being able to sleep in. Sleeping in this morning was heavenly. I woke up a few times, but finally got up after 10am! So lovely.
  • Candles. It's sort of a weird thing to be thankful for but, since we don't have a fireplace, this is as close as I can get to the warmth of a fire on a chilly fall day.

someday, we'll be able to have a real fireplace!

  • Dinner with friends, at our monthly knitting night. Last night's dinner went great! The lasagna turned out perfectly, taught me that pre-made meals for guests is definitely the right call. It was so blissfully unstressful before everyone arrived, since I had already made the lasagna and the salad. All I had to do was pop the lasagna in the oven and toss the salad to prep once people were here. For dessert, I made these,

Pumpkin Souffles from Trader Joes, which were super easy and tasty with a little scoop of ice cream on top, and had that perfect fall taste. We also had a pot of my favorite tea flavor, almond biscotti.
It was really fun to break out my cups and saucers - I use them often, but it was nice to use the set.

  • having a lazy day. I'm still not feeling as unsick as I'd like, so I'm thankful I can just have a couch day, reading and watching tv and knitting (and working on some report cards - joys of this time of year). Still, it's nice to rest.

p.s. I'm not sure if I've mentioned that my camera met an (un)timely end a few weeks ago. Hence the numerous amount of pictures from other sources. Hopefully this will be rectified soon!

Fall Visit

While Ed and I have lived in the Bay Area together for 3 years, the sad truth was that my parents hadn't visited our apartment together since the weekend after we moved in. They've visited a few times on separate trips, but it was hard to find the time for a planned visit (and we went down to visit them pretty often, so we still saw them a good amount).

So, it was with much happiness that we set up this visit, when my parents mentioned they were hoping to spend a weekend with us in the Bay Area. This weekend was both to visit with us, but also to celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary.

After spending a day in beautiful San Francisco, my parents arrived Friday afternoon (before me, as my commute home seems to be increasingly full of other commuters). After some resting and catching up, we whipped together dinner - an easy and tasty lasagna (that was a test run for my dinner get together next week) and some salad.

While our little kitchen is a bit crammed with 4 diners, it still was a lot of fun to use our new fall place mats and napkins, and to be sitting at our dinner table with my parents.

After dinner, Ed was inspired to make us dessert - an amazing pumpkin Bourbon milk shake, courtesy of Sunset recipes. I'll have to post the recipe later, because it was spectacular!

The next morning, we had our go to "special" breakfast of french toast, made with thickly sliced panera's sourdough bread, and topped with bananas. It is decadent and delicious and perfect for a lazy Saturday morning. We did balance it out with some healthy grapefruit, which made us feel just virtuous enough feel totally justified taking that second helping.

After taking care of some errands, we headed out on our "adventure" of the day, taking my parents hiking at one of our favorite spots - Skyline. This is one of the closest places to us, and reminds us of Mt Tam, with it's rolling hills, gorgeous vistas, lovely trails. We hiked for about an hour, and loved every minute of it.

After our hike, we did something Ed and I have been meaning to do since we moved to this area - go wine tasting at the local wineries!

Our first stop was Savannah Channel, which we pass every time we drive up to Skyline. It was a lovely winery, with the tasting room inside a 100 year old wooden building. The wine itself was quite tasty, and we ended up buying a bottle of red to have with lunch (our very fancy subway picnic),

After finishing the bottle (good thing we shared our tastings and Ed didn't have much of the bottle), we hopped in the car for the windy backroads drive to our next winery. We were going through roads we'd never been on before, and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, we got a little turned around and had to do some backtracking.

Eventually we made it up to Ridge Winery, apparently the wine my parents drank on their first date! The drive up made me a bit nervous, once we got down to a one lane road with some substantial drop offs, so I was surprised by how crowded it was. I suppose when it's really good wine, people will find it.

After our tasting, we walked the grounds a little, taking in the beautiful fall colors.

That night, we went out to Forbes Mill Steakhouse, which was delicious as always.

Unfortunately, the next day I woke up pretty darn sick with a cold, so we kept it low key, going out to Scrambl'z for breakfast
and then went to see Puss in Boots (very cute). After that, we had time for  quick game of Dominion, and then it was time for them to leave!

Hopefully it won't be another 3 years before they come a visit again!

Thankfulness: Day 4

Today, I am thankful for a lot (I'm not sure on the 'official rules' with this but I'm just going to post everything, as I think it's great practice to practice appreciation).

I am thankful that....

  • It's Friday, which means I get to sleep in tomorrow!
  • (source)
  • I have no concrete plans this weekend, which means I will be reading a lot and enjoying the free time.
  • I am having people over tonight, and already made the dinner (lasagna) last night (hence Ed's trip to the store yesterday), so I will hopefully be able to be more relaxed than normal getting ready.
  • I am starting to feel better and am going to go for a run this weekend.
  • I came up with a fun way for the kids to act out atmospheric pressure, and they actually seemed to be getting it.
  • (We made a visual like this, except with kids as the blue dots and some butcher paper as the atmosphere)
  •  The weather is crisp but beautiful, and really feels like November.
Happy Friday all!

Thankfulness: Day 3

Today I am thankful that Ed went grocery shopping for me, so that I will have less to do once I get home from work.

Ed is great about taking advantage of his flexible work schedule to do things like clean the house, go shopping, or pick up things we need. Sometimes little things like that make such a difference, especially when the day's been a bit rough (still not quite sickness free).

I'm also thankful to have the time to clean the house tonight, even though I don't really feel like "being an adult" (I characterize all those grown up these we have to do, like chores, cooking, cleaning, paying bills as acting like a grown up. I still have a ways to go before I am adult like all the time). I am thankful that I am an adult, though, because, as my students often remind me, being a kid can be pretty hard, too,

30 Days of Thankfulness: Days 1 and 2

I saw this on my friend Christine's blog, and thought I would jump on the bandwagon, as I was just thinking last night now important it is to be concious of what you are thankful for. Basically, each day in November you state something you are thankful for. So, here are mine, from today and yesterday.

Day 1:
Yesterday, I was thankful to have the option to take a sick day when I needed it.

While I'm not really into the cutesy pics with misspelled headings, this one is pretty cute, and is definitely the cutest of the "sick day" images I could find :) (source)

I am so grateful that I have sick days built up and that I was able to sleep in until 9 yesterday and recover somewhat from this cold I got on Sunday.

Day 2:
Today, I am thankful that my students are overall really sweet. One has brought me an apple for snack a few times,

and it has really made my morning to not only have a delicious snack, but to feel like my students care. I also appreciated that my students missed me when I was gone. After last year, having a group of kids who is genuinely caring is so very wonderful.

I am also thankful to have a caring principal, who left me leave the staff meeting early since I wasn't feeling well, and told me that I should stay home tomorrow, too, if I'm not feeling better. Of course, there always feels like there is too much to do, so I don't think I will actually stay home - hopefully an evening of no talking will put my voice back to normal :). Still, I do feel thankful to work at such a great school.

Tomorrow, I hope to be thankful for a speedy recovery from this cold!

New Blog Design

Since I am home sick with a nasty cold that took my voice away (teaching with no voice is such a pain - after doing it all day on halloween and trying to keep my kids in control at our Halloween party yesterday, I decided to take a recovery day today), I decided to take the time to update my blog. Since I am forever looking at other blogs with their cute designs and feeling envious, I decided to do a quick google search for blog backgrounds and came up with this.

So cool!  About a billion different free blog decors to choose from, and pretty easy to install. Unfortunately for me, I have apparently exceeded my blog picture uploading ability so I couldn't install the cute banner that matches the background, but I'm still really happy with how everything looks.

Slowly but surely, I'm figuring out this technology thing :).

Cubs

I had to post a follow up to my earier post. Today in class,  one of my ELA kiddos the looked at me and giggling, asked, "Mrs. Lyon, do you have any cubs?"

It took some of my other students a few minutes to get it, and the student who asked the question seemed pretty proud of himself.

Needless to say, I told him that no, the Lyon household has no cubs for the time being, and lets get going on Language Arts.

5th Graders are so cute!
